I’m a Maggot. When Slipknot hit the shelves, wasn’t but 500 miles or so away from their home town. As kids, my friends and I, would blast our car stereos with “Surfacing” cranked at full volume. We’d scare the hell out of old folks and others, not prepared for the throat ripping vocals.
Later in life, some good buddies of mine got signed by the Clown, and a record company just getting it’s feet wet with Metal. Shitty ending for my friends in the band, but I was able to meet the Clown and Sid. When I met the Clown, I hiked up my sleeve to show him my tattoo. The tattoo is the lyrics from “Surfacing” as follows:
“Fuck it all! Fuck this world!
Fuck everything that you stand for!
Don’t belong! Don’t exist!
Don’t give a shit!
Don’t ever judge me!”
He pointed to my tattoo, and said “If there is one message that we stand for, that is it right there.”
Be you. Even if it’s not popular. Always be true to yourself.
